My recipe for a Formula 1 cardigan

My recipe for a Formula 1 cardigan

If you want to knit your own Formula 1 cardigan, here is a recipe to help you.

Patterns that can be ALL stripes.

For the 2020 Formula 1 season I knitted a striped cardigan with our F1 colorways, representing all podium places of that season. I used the Slanted Sleeven pattern, which has beautiful shoulders. But any simple top-down seamless cardigan or sweater will work well to show of all the stripes. For example, the free on the beach sweater is a nice base for stripy mayhem as well. Last year I finished a cardigan with the continuous sleeve method that I love wearing, so I’ll base this year’s F1 cardigan on that one.

How many rows do I knit per podium place?

Each podium place is 4 rows of knitting in my 2020 cardigan. Except for the first podium, which is the neckband, the picked up stitches and one WS row. For this season the number of rows per podium is adjusted a bit. If all goes according to plan, there will be 23 race weekends this year (instead of the 17 last year). With my gauge 4 rows per podium place will make the cardigan too long for my liking. So I will knit 4 rows for the winner and 2 rows for second and third place. Except again for the first podium. First place will be the neckband and second and third will be 4 rows. At this point they are still so short and would disappear in the overall cardigan. I hope it will look more balanced like this.

Here is the calculation I did (gauge of 30 rows per 10cm/4”):

If I want to reach an appr. length of 60cm (for the body and the sleeves) then I need to knit 6 x 30r = 180 rows.

180:23 = 7.8 rows per race weekend, which I round up to 8 rows. This isn’t easily divided by 3 drivers, but I don’t mind making the stripes of the winners longer. I might even prefer it, because you can then more easily see all the winners of the season in the end result!
